Folded light
Folded Light is a sculptural series that transforms paper into a medium of depth, movement, and reflection. The geometric precision of each fold explores the dynamic interplay of light, shadow, and color.
Folded Light echoes the structured organisation of urban and natural landscapes, particularly inspired by how the Dutch landscape is divided and ordered by human intervention. These folds represent the way society compartmentalizes and structures nature, highlighting our tendency to shape our surroundings in line with our own needs. In this architectural homage to the natural world, Folded Light embodies both the human desire for control and the underlying need to coexist harmoniously with nature.
Concept
On a personal level, this series reflects the way human presence reshapes and adds complexity to our environment, just as light and shadow interact with the folds. Viewers are encouraged to consider their own interactions with nature, whether we strive to live in balance with it or attempt to reshape it to our preferences.
Design
Each piece in Folded Light stands alone as a study of light, form, and shadow, yet together as a triptych, they form a narrative of collective and individual. The triptych format underscores the themes of movement and rhythm, creating a visual dialogue between order and spontaneity.
The color choices deepen this dialogue. Shades of blue evoke the sea and landscapes, black reflects the structure of urban life, and vibrant orange symbolizes individuality within a uniform world. Color becomes a storytelling device within the work, narrating the human experience within rigid frameworks and illustrating the coexistence of identity and uniformity.
Each fold and angle is meticulously calculated, allowing layered shadows and visual energy to emerge as the viewer’s perspective shifts. Like in society there are sunlit and shadows parts, highs and lows, both at collective and individual level.
Craftsmanship, Material & Process
Folded Light reinterprets traditional origami and geometric abstraction. Each fold and color is carefully selected and printed prior to scoring and folding, creating an ever-evolving experience as light and perspective change. Shaping the paper from flexible into a static, yet changeable shape reinforces the narrative of collective and individual landscaping. Reflecting how both individuals and environments are shaped over time.
